Interview: Trophy Wife
Oxford trio 'Trophy Wife' are somewhat of a favourite amongst team 1FTP. If you've been following us for a while then you'll know how much we rate these guys. They're overall musical vibe is an infectious blend of melodic, prog indie disco which has got us all hooked and we've only heard three tracks. And, as if our word isn't enough, they're also Yannis Philipakkis' (Foals) current listening choice.
We managed to contact them for a little Q&A feature. Have a read.....
(One For The People) Can you give us a brief introduction to Trophy Wife?
(Trophy Wife) The band grew from the three of us getting in late at night with some beers and a lot of weed, and trying to record the most satisfying melodies we could muster over an endless disco beat. It’s all about restraint for us. We didn’t set out to form a band, we just found ourselves wanting to make music that was essentially reserved in nature. Now it feels like the best way of working.
(1FTP) You were initially brought to our attention via a tip off from Yannis of Foals. What is your relationship with him?
(TW) Yannis lived in the next room to where we recorded and we kept him up at night. He'd come in from time to time to tell us to turn it down. He seemed to come round to it though, perhaps out of necessity.
(1FTP) How far along are you with a debut EP? Any rough dates in mind? And can we expect a similar type of vibe as ''Microlite'' & the Joanna Newsom number ''Book Of Right On''?
(TW) Since we started a few months ago, we've been pretty prolific. We're applying the finishing touches to a whole set of songs at the moment. You can expect more of what you might have heard from us so far. We work within quite a definite format, both in recording and production. Also, because all of the songs are being made in such a short amount of time, they would go quite well together on a release. But first we need a label.

-Trophy Wife, 2010
(1FTP) Fill in the blanks for us..... Trophy Wife are ambitionless office disco mixed with a healthy addiction to Studio and Polmo Polpo with a little bit of the towel
thrown in.
(1FTP) What are the goals and aspirations for Trophy Wife?
(TW) To have our music soundtracking the final sequence in an episode of Madmen.
(1FTP) What are you currently listening to?
(TW) Studio, Polmo Polpo, The Shadows, Glissandro 70, Caribou, Donna Summer.
(1FTP) What's your plans for the rest of 2010?
(TW) Play a show and spend our Sainsbury's nectar points.
(1FTP) Ok last one, this one's a bit of a laugh. There have been a few times when we've googled "Trophy Wife" and came across these guys instead of you - http://www.myspace.com/trophywifemusic - have you seen them? These guys look serious! Do you fear a future lawsuit?
(TW) Right, I'm pretty sure these guys work in the Accounts department. They always copy our ideas. But seriously though, it's okay. They're our dads.
To enjoy the sounds of ''Microlite'' & the awesome Joanna Newsom cover ''Book Of Right On'' head to the Trophy Wife Myspace page. You wont be disappointed.
